When I stand before God at the end of my life I would hope that I would not have a single talent left and I could say, "I used everything you gave me."
Erma Bombeck
I began writing as a hobby during my pre-teen and teen years. Like many fledgling writers, I wrote mostly short stories and terrible poetry. As high school approached, I eagerly applied to become a member of my school’s newspaper. I felt I had validated myself as a "real" writer when I became the publication’s gossip columnist.
Years later, the hobby of my childhood has turned into a profession. I no longer write poetry or gossip columns, and only occasionally write short stories. The majority of my writing is for businesses and sometimes magazines and newspapers. At times I complete writing projects for individuals.
The road to becoming an independent, paid professional was not an easy one. Rejection and frustration were my constant companions for longer than I care to admit. Writing for paid publication is very competitive. Besides searching for work and coping with those who don’t want to pay for the quality service we provide, professional writers also need to fight against the name below par amateurs give us.
But to me the fight was, and still is, worth the effort. I’m doing what I love and sometimes the work I produce touches someone in a way I never imagined it would.
